The Impact of Soaring Oil Prices Has Shocked Rupiah and Bonds
The rupiah exchange rate weakened slightly today, continuing yesterdays weakening against the US dollar. On Thursday (March 12th), the spot rupiah exchange rate weakened by Rp 7, or 0.04%, to Rp 16,893 per US dollar.

The rupiah Jisdor also weakened by Rp 32, or 0.19%, to Rp 16,899 per US dollar.

Bond yields increased slightly as rising oil prices and continued fiscal concerns weighed on government assets.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year government bond rose to 6.72%. Meanwhile, the yield on the 5-year bond rose to 6.15%. This is the highest level since last August.

All Asian currencies weakened against the US dollar amid strengthening Brent oil prices, which have again surpassed US$100 per barrel.

The Philippine peso was the most depressed, falling 0.44%. The Korean won weakened 0.23%. The Thai baht weakened 0.20%.

The Malaysian ringgit weakened 0.16%. The Singapore dollar weakened 0.13%. The Indian rupee weakened 0.13%.

The Taiwanese dollar weakened 0.10%. The Chinese yuan weakened 0.03%. The Hong Kong dollar weakened 0.01%.

Only the Japanese yen strengthened 0.04%.

The dollar index, which measures the US dollar against major global currencies, strengthened 0.17% to 99.4 in todays trading. The dollar index has strengthened for the second consecutive day.

The US dollar is heading for a new 2026 high as the Iran war continues to depress energy prices. Forex traders predict that the index could rise to its highest level since December 2025.
