Rupiah Strengthens to 13,304

The rupiah appreciated 27 points to 13,304 from 13,331 per US dollar in the interbank market on Friday morning.

Samuel Sekuritas economist Rangga Cipta said that rupiah was stronger against the greenback following positive market’s response players to domestic economic conditions.

The combination of positive Moodys outlook on Indonesias credit [rating] and a rather weakening of US dollar in the global market have helped maintain rupiah [positive] movement, he said on Friday, February 10, 2017.

However, he said that rupiah could potentially experience reversal trend amid political uncertainty ahead of Jakarta election. Unconducive condition may affect rupiah movement, he said.

On the other hand, the U.S. low level of unemployment and President Donald Trump’s promises to cut taxes could make the dollar stronger.

Binaartha Sekuritas analyst Reza Priyambada said credit rating agency Moody’s upgrade on Indonesia’s credit rating indicates the country’s improved economic resistance.
